The IRA for Minors is an IRA account (Traditional or Roth IRA) that is opened for the benefit of a child under the age of 18 who has earned income.


The IRA for Minors is opened by the minor's custodian (parent or legal guardian) who must also sign the application.

    IRA for Minors Eligibility Requirements
    • Eligible participants are under the age of 18
    • The minor must have earned income for the tax year in which a contribution is made
    • The minor must be a U.S. citizen or resident with a valid U.S. address. If the minor is not a U.S. citizen or resident, works for a broker-dealer, or is a director or significant shareholder of a publicly traded company, additional requirements apply
    • A custodian (parent or legal guardian) establishes, trades, and maintains account for the benefit of the minor. Only one custodian is allowed per account
    • IRAs for Minors (Traditional & Roth) must be established by the tax filing deadline (without extensions) for the tax year to which your qualifying contribution(s) will apply. Applications postmarked by this date will be accepted.

The name of the delivering institution
Your account number at that institution
The registration (ownership of the account)
