Water for the future

Water is both economically essential and a vital resource for human health and well-being. As just one example, it takes between 2,000 and 5,000 liters of water to produce a single person’s daily food. Against that background, population growth, climate change, and pollution are threatening the world’s freshwater supplies. In fact, by 2035 worldwide demand for freshwater could exceed supply by 40%, according to some forecasts. Meeting this rapidly growing demand will require a global effort to develop water supplies, build infrastructure, and conserve the water we have.*
