In this two-part virtual event you’ll learn the basics of trading options, followed by some practical strategies and how to execute them using E*TRADE’s tools and platforms. Part 1: The nuts and bolts of trading options

First Things First: Introduction to Options

Join us as we set a solid foundation by exploring the basics of options. We’ll cover the history of options, options capabilities and limitations, unfounded myths, and the language of options. We will also show you how to add options trading to your brokerage accounts and upgrade your options level.

The Ins and Outs of Buying Puts and Calls

Options provide an opportunity to potentially profit from either a rise or decline in stock price. We’ll explore how changes in price, time, and volatility may affect an option’s value. We will conclude this session with a demo of how to enter an options trade, and then exit the position when you’re ready.

Tools for Finding, Entering, and Exiting Options Trades

Once you’ve mastered the basic concepts of options, the next step is to formulate your strategy and put it into action. In this session, we’ll dive deeper into how to find potential options trades using E*TRADE tools and screeners and walk you through the steps for creating your entry and exit plan.

In this session, you’ll first explore the covered call—a widely used strategy to potentially earn additional income from stocks you already own. You will then learn a way to potentially generate extra income on cash holdings and possibly acquire stocks you like at a lower cost.

One of the benefits of trading options is leverage—the ability to control a relatively large position with a small amount of capital. Dave Whitmore
Senior Strategist, Trader Education, E*TRADE Securities LLC

Dave Whitmore is a Senior Strategist of Trader Education with E*TRADE Securities LLC. Dave has been teaching investments and trading for more than twenty years. He has worked with thousands of investors, at events and online, and taught a wide range of topics, including technical analysis, stock fundamentals, stock selection, risk management, options, and exchange-traded funds. Dave holds an MBA from New York University and a BA in business economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two children where he enjoys high school sports, competitive dance, golf, skiing, Jeopardy, jazz, and amateur ornithology. 

Rick Swope
Senior Strategist, Investor Education, E*TRADE Securities LLC

Rick Swope is a Senior Strategist of Investor Education with E*TRADE Securities LLC. As a veteran in the industry, Rick has presented at hundreds of seminars across the U.S. and around the world. His expertise covers technical analysis, market strategy, and risk management. He has extensive media experience, including a regional PBS weekly show, a national PBS pledge program, and numerous radio and television appearances. He is the principal author of the Amazon best seller, Five Points for Trading Success (Wiley, 2007) and co-author of Trading By Numbers (Wiley, 2012). Rick’s teaching includes corporate training as well as six years as an adjunct engineering instructor. He studied in the disciplines of engineering, mathematics, operations research, and statistics. He is married with two children and resides in Atlanta, GA. Rick holds the FINRA Series 7 license.

Shawn Howell
Senior Strategist, Investor Education, E*TRADE Securities LLC

Shawn joins the E*TRADE education team after two decades as a trader, author, educator, and executive for some of the financial industry's leading brokerage and training firms, including Charles Schwab, Investools, and Thinkorswim Group. In 2009 Shawn co-founded Pro Market Advisors, E*TRADE's education partner for many years. In 2012 Shawn co-authored Trading by Numbers: Scoring Strategies for Every Market (Wiley). Shawn holds the FINRA Series 7 license.
