Know all the ways I can make my initial deposit
There are a number of ways you can make your initial deposit, including check, wire, and online transfer. We cannot accept cash deposits. Your options for making your first deposit vary based on whether you're opening a bank or brokerage account.
For a new Morgan Stanley Private Bank account:
Here are the main ways to fund a new Morgan Stanley Private Bank account:
- Transfer money from an existing Morgan Stanley Private Bank or E*TRADE account.
Through the online application process or via TransferMoney, you can move money quickly from another Morgan Stanley Private Bank or E*TRADE account to fund your new Morgan Stanley Private Bank account.
- Transfer money electronically from another institution.
The online application process enables the transfer of funds from other financial institutions. You'll just need the account number and ABA transit routing number for your other account (you can find both of these numbers on checks for that account).

Know what I need to have handy to open a brokerage or bank account
To make your application go as smoothly as possible, make sure you have the following information handy before you open an E*TRADE or Morgan Stanley Private Bank account.
- You'll need to know the following about yourself and any co-applicants:
- Legal name
- Social Security number or Tax ID*
- Birth date
- Driver's license number
- E-mail address
- You'll need to know this about any beneficiaries:
- Legal name
- Social Security number or Tax ID
* For business accounts (only checking accounts can be opened as business accounts), you will also need to send in the first two pages of the corporate resolution with your deposit.
Note:If you plan to
transfer your initial deposit from another institution, you'll also need to know the ABA (routing) number and your account number at that institution.

You can deposit most types of checks and some
drafts into your accounts. Also see the list of items you
can't deposit.
Note:
If you're applying for an account and
making your first deposit, in addition to the following options, you can also transfer funds from another account during the online account application process.
Your initial deposit to open an account can be:
- Any of the following made payable to yourself or Morgan Stanley Private Bank for bank accounts or E*TRADE for brokerage accounts:
- Personal checks (if the name of the check matches the name on your new account)

- Cashier's checks

- Foreign checks payable in US dollars and through a US bank
Once your account is open, you can deposit:

Know which types of items I can't deposit into my account
There are certain types of items we cannot accept for deposit into accounts. There are also some types of checks we cannot accept as your initial deposit when opening your account.
We
cannot accept:
- Cash
- Traveler's checks
- Money orders
- Temporary checks
- Starter checks
- Checks issued more than six months ago
- Checks not payable to yourself or Morgan Stanley Private Bank or E*TRADE, or their respective account holders
- Post-dated checks
- Credit card checks
- Loan checks
- Unsigned checks
- Incomplete checks
- Foreign currency checks
- Checks drawn on non-US institutions
- Third party checks
- Counter checks are not accepted by E*TRADE
- Altered checks (white-out, revised amounts, etc.)
And each of the following items cannot be accepted as an initial deposit when opening an account:
- Government checks
- Tax refund checks
- Corporate checks not payable to Morgan Stanley Private Bank or E*TRADE
- Personal checks made payable to you

Deposit a check through our Mobile App
Mobile is a convenient, free service that allows you to quickly and easily deposit checks into your E*TRADE or Morgan Stanley Private Bank account online using eligible devices. You can deposit many types of checks and some drafts into your account. Below, you'll find instructions for bank and brokerage accounts.
To deposit a check or draft through our mobile app into your account:
- To make a deposit, simply enter the amount of the check, select a valid account, and follow the onscreen instructions.
Notes:
- Mobile Check Deposit is available to all US retail customers. Mobile Check Deposit can be used with most E*TRADE brokerage accounts and Morgan Stanley Private Bank accounts. CD, HELOC and futures accounts are not eligible for Mobile Check Deposit.
- Ensure check is properly endorsed to avoid deposit rejection.
- Mobile check deposit limit is $250,000 per day, per customer logon ID.
- Any Mobile Check Deposit received before 4 p.m. ET and in good order will post to your account at the end of that banking business day. Check deposits made after 4 p.m. ET will be processed and will post the following banking business day.
- Mobile Check Deposit feature is available on E*TRADE Mobile for Apple iPhone®(IOS 12.0 and higher), as well as Android™ phones (8 or higher).

You can deposit many types of checks and some
drafts into your account. Below, you'll find separate instructions for bank and brokerage accounts.
Don't forget to include a deposit slip with each transaction. Deposit slips are sent to you with your monthly statements. You can also find them in your checkbook.
For a brokerage or bank IRA contribution, please include this
deposit slip with your check.

It's fast and easy to wire money into your account from another institution. Below, you'll find separate instructions for wiring money to your bank and brokerage accounts.
To wire money to your E*TRADE account:

- Please note, funds sent in foreign currency to the USD account above will be automatically converted to USD at daily rates by Wells Fargo Bank and E*TRADE prior to posting the amount to your account. The daily conversion rates will include the following Wells Fargo Bank and E*TRADE fees:
$0-$49,999.99=160 bps
$50,000.00 to $99,999.99=110 bps

In the event that the USD funds cannot be posted to your account, the wire will be returned to the originator in USD. The returned wire may be subject to Wells Fargo Bank and E*TRADE fees. If you do not wish your foreign currency funds to be automatically converted to USD by Wells Fargo and E*TRADE, please convert the funds in USD at your local financial institution prior to sending wire to the instructions above.
Check your account the next business day to verify that the funds have been received. If your institution included your account number and the wire was received before 6 p.m. ET the previous business day, the funds should be in your account.
To wire money to your Morgan Stanley Private Bank account:
- Contact your other financial institution and ask them to wire funds to your Morgan Stanley Private Bank account, or print out and complete our incoming wire form.

Set up direct deposit
With direct deposit you can have funds automatically deposited into your account. You can also set up direct deposit for more than one account. Below, you'll find separate instructions for bank and brokerage accounts.
For your Morgan Stanley Private Bank account:
- Get a direct deposit authorization form from your employer, or download one from our website.
- Provide the following information on the form:
- The ABA transit routing number: 256072691
- The financial institution name: Morgan Stanley Private Bank
- The account type (indicate checking, money market, or savings)
- Your Morgan Stanley Private Bank account number (you can find this number on your statement and at the bottom of your checks)
- Give the form to your employer.
For your E*TRADE account:
- Contact your employer, government agency, or mutual fund company and request a direct deposit authorization form, or get one from us.
- Complete the form, sign it, and include:
- The ABA transit routing number: 056073573
- The financial institution name: E*TRADE
- The account type: Checking
- Provide your 9-digit brokerage account number
